Undergraduate Programs

The English department houses two majors (English, with four possible concentrations, or English Writing, Rhetoric, and Technology), four minors, a certificate, and several degree-enhancing experiences. To learn about our Composition program, click here.  

English Major Concentrations

English Major/Creative Writing

This course of study offered by the Department of English is designed to develop a student’s ability to read literature responsibly and imaginatively, to foster an understanding and appreciation of our literary inheritance, and to provide the historical perspective from which to evaluate contemporary writing and to produce it.

English Major/Film Studies

The Film Studies option within the English major is designed to prepare students for a range of professional careers in areas such as film criticism, video production, and the teaching of film, as well as graduate programs in film studies.

English Major/Literature

The Literature Option offers a collaborative learning experience through the reading and discussion of ground-breaking books. Seminars focus on the meaning of these works for past readers and the experience of reading together in our own contemporary moment.

On Campus or Online! The English Writing, Rhetoric, and Technology program can be completed fully online or fully on-campus. Most of our students, however, end up taking a mix of online and on-campus courses in order to juggle changing work schedules and busy lives. You can decide what’s best for you.

 

Minors

Creative Writing Minor

The creative writing minor gives students the opportunity to complement their area of major study with experience writing and reading poetry or fiction.

Film Studies Minor

The film studies minor offers students the opportunity to gain an informed understanding of the sophisticated medium of film, including its language and history. 

Literature Minor

The literature minor is designed for students who are interested in the study of English literature but who have elected to major in another area. 

Broaden Your Experience

CS+ Program

The University of Colorado Denver's CS+ program is designed to allow students to earn a computer science degree that will be applicable to a wide variety of fields. This bachelor of arts degree can be paired with almost any minor, or serve as part of a double major. Our English Writing, Rhetoric and Technology degree is particularly well-suited to complement the CS+ degree. 

Latin Honors

Latin honors are conferred at graduation to students who participate in the department's honors program. Students may be awarded Latin honors—cum laude, magna cum laude or summa cum laude—based on the range and quality of their coursework as well as an honors project completed over one semester with the professor of their choice.
