Course Objectives

Grammar

Level 4 grammar focuses on producing more advanced structures using all tenses and passive/active voice. Detailed studies of noun clauses, noun phrases, advanced conditionals, and passive modals are conducted. Upon completion of this level, students will be able to correctly use all verb tenses mixed in context, produce these tenses correctly in a variety of sentence structures, and incorporate these advanced forms into their writing.

Writing

Students entering this level should have a firm grasp of sentence structure and essay format. The focus of Level 4 writing is to research more academic sources and incorporate sources more effectively into writing, using both in-text citations and reference lists. Sentence structure instruction focuses on utilizing all sentence constructions to clearly articulate relationships between ideas. Upon completion of this level, students will be able to write 4-6 page argumentative essays using academic vocabulary and phrases to summarize and expound arguments, as well as consistently use transitions and subordination to show relationships between ideas.

Reading

Level 4 reading is designed to practice the same analytical skills previously learned, but in different contexts. The class focuses primarily on fiction works (short stories, poems, excerpts of longer works), and requires students to practice the same kinds of skills: basic comprehension, drawing conclusions, relating texts to other contexts, and answering longer essay questions. Literary terms are mastered, along with vocabulary and reading aloud. Students also critically analyze texts at a deeper level to understand authorial intent, audience, purpose, etc. Upon completion of this level, students will be able to read and understand short works of fiction and respond to these works through critical analysis and interpretation.

Listening & Speaking

Level 4 listening & speaking requires students to greatly expand the skills learned in previous levels. Students continue to participate in small group discussions, but will also learn how to participate in a formal debate. When giving speeches, students will incorporate PowerPoint into researched presentations. Students will also attend a CUD class, take Cornell notes, and offer a response to/summary of the lecture.

Advanced Vocabulary

Advanced Vocabulary focuses on expanding the vocabulary of students by applying new strategies to understand unfamiliar words, learning spelling guidelines, working on pronunciation, and using target words in speech and writing. Upon completion of this course, students will improve their spelling, enunciation, and comprehension of common academic vocabulary. They will be able to use new vocabulary accurately with attention to tone/connotation and syntax/grammar.
