What is the Writing & Editing with AI Certificate?
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is upending how we write and communicate–in our workplaces, at school, creatively, and interpersonally. Writing professionals across many fields are increasingly expected to know how to use AI in a rapidly changing environment. By completing this certificate, students develop the capacity to question what this influx of AI writing tools means for us as writers, readers, and humans, and they gain the foundational skills needed to write and edit alongside AI.
The Writing and Editing with AI certificate program offers students the opportunity to design their own tracks of formal study at the intersections of writing and AI and to acquire hands-on and professional experience writing with AI (through internships and experiential/client-partnered courses).
Learning outcomes
Certificate earners will:
- Learn how tools like ChatGPT work with an emphasis on Natural Language Processing, Large Language Models and fundamental constructs such as “emergence”
- Understand ethical considerations such as AI bias and plagiarism
- Identify the affordances and constraints of AI in various writing contexts
- Learn how to collaborate with AI tools in a team setting, ensuring that technology enhances, rather than hinders, collaborative writing efforts
- Develop research and editing skills augmented by AI
- Reflect on and analyze what it means to write, think, and learn with AI and what the implications are for the field of writing as well as human expression and knowledge creation
- Complete a portfolio of work that demonstrates the students’ learning and skills in writing and editing with AI
