Letter from Dean Pamela Jansma
I want to make all of you aware of an upcoming opportunity that could have a real and lasting impact on our campus. #RealCollege is hosting a National Convening on Food and Housing Insecurity on September 28 and 29 at Houston Community College’s West Houston Institute in Houston, Texas. #RealCollege is a national movement created by the Hope Center for College, Community, and Justice. Focused on the struggles, triumphs, and realities of what it means to be in college today, #RealCollege seeks to change the landscape of higher education so that all students can afford and complete their studies. Without sufficient food and a safe place to sleep, college students across the nation and on our own campus are struggling to learn and complete their education. #RealCollege is the movement to do something about it. CU Denver participated in the most recent #RealCollege survey, with 17 percent of students that took the survey indicating they had experienced homelessness at least once in the past year. To learn more you can view and the multi-state survey results here. At this gathering participating educators, students, practitioners, policymakers, researchers, and activists will work to develop strategies and take action to secure students' basic needs. Registration is open now, and CLAS is looking into possible funding to allow a limited number of faculty, staff, and/or students to participate. If you would be interested please let me know.
