Congratulations 2021 Fall PBHL Graduates!

We applaud your perseverance through this difficult semester. We did not want to let the completion of your Bachelor’s go by without acknowledging this important milestone.

We hope that you can attend the in-person Fall 2021 Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, December 18, 2021 at 9:00am that will take place at the Colorado Convention Center, Exhibit Hall A. This is CU Denver first in-person ceremony in two years and is committed to your safety. Masks will be required for all attendees. All graduates who would like to celebrate in person must register to join the event and reserve their guest tickets.

Register for 2022 Spring Electives

Spring 2022 Electives

We have some great PBHL electives being offered this spring in both online and hybird formats.

PBHL 2052, Global Demography and Health with Dr. Ivan Ramirez. Online (meets Core Curriculum International Perspectives requirement). Examines current issues in population growth, fertility, mortality and migration in the United States and globally. Introduces students to the basic tools of demography and encourages them to think critically about the causes and consequences of population change.  Contact ivan.ramirez@ucdenver.edu with questions.

PBHL 3002, Ethnicity, Health, and Social Justice with Dr. Hyeyoung Oh Nelson. Online. Surveys core issues contributing to racial or ethnic minority differences in health status. Historical and contemporary U.S. health and social policy, including the areas of environmental health, sexual and reproductive health, children and immigrants, are examined. Contact hyeyoung.nelson@ucdenver.edu with questions.

PBHL 3010, Human Sexuality and Public Health with Leah Pauline. Online. The goal of this course is to critically engage students in the analysis of varying aspects and issues surrounding human sexuality in the US and globally through analysis of historical and contemporary construction of sexuality, but mostly how issues within sexuality show up in public health. We will consider sexuality from social, cultural, political, and public health contexts to identify key factors that influence sexual behavior and impact health outcomes. We will discuss how to use those contexts to develop public health approaches to improve the sexual health of individuals and populations.. Contact leah.pauline@ucdenver.edu with questions.

PBHL 4200, The Global HIV/AIDS Epidemic with Petros Vilakati. Online. This course covers the biological, social, economic, and political dimensions of the global HIV epidemic. Using inter-disciplinary perspectives, students will learn about the changing nature of the epidemic over time and in different regions of the world. Students will also apply health intervention and promotion theories to design HIV prevention interventions. This course will equip students to apply lessons from the HIV epidemic to other health and social issues. Contact bonginkhosi.vilakati@ucdenver.edu with questions.

PBHL 4031, Ethnographic Research in Public Health with Dr. Jean Scandlyn. Hybrid, Tues/Thurs 2:00-3:15pm. Ethnography studies how people see the world and act in everyday life and can be applied in public health practice to improve community health. The course covers research methods including direct observation, interviews and focus groups, rapid assessment and community-based research and basic analytic strategies, including review of computer software, coding, and data display techniques. Contact jean.scandlyn@ucdenver.edu with questions.

GEOG 3051, Geography of Health with Dr. Peter Anthamatten. In person, Mon/Wed 11:00am-12:15pm. Offers a critical geographic perspective to human health issues, examining disease distributions, how changing relationships between people and their environments (natural, built, and social environments) influence health, and different approaches to the study of health in geography. COMM 4575, Designing Health Messages with Dr. Autumn Boyer. Online. Examines the roles of communication in the design and impact of health messages/campaigns. Learners will design and assess health communication messages/campaigns in a participatory, process-oriented way using varied communication tools. Contact autumn.boyer@ucdenver.edu with questions.

The Rachel Tanur Memorial Prize for Visual Sociology

The Rachel Tanur Memorial Prize for Visual Sociology recognizes students in the social sciences who incorporate visual analysis in their work. The contest is open worldwide to undergraduate and graduate students majoring in any social science. Entries for the 2022 competition must be received by March 1, 2022.  All prize winners will be awarded student membership to the ISA and the Visual Sociology Research Committee.The prize is awarded biennially.

MARC U-STAR Program

The MARC U-STAR program  scholarship program provides financial and academic support to students who are interested in research careers and plan to pursue a Ph.D. in the behavioral or biomedical sciences. This is an amazing opportunity for publlic health students. Some benefits include: 60% tuition coverage for fall and spring semesters, $1,137 monthly stipend, and travel support for conferences/workshops. Certificate in Spanish for the Healthcare Profession

The Undergraduate Certificate in Spanish for the Healthcare Professions is fully an online program. It seeks to facilitate effective communication between healthcare professionals and their Spanish speaking patients and clients.
