Aquiring Grants and Other Research Funding

It is important for faculty and departments to apply for external research and curriculum grants. The CU Denver Office of Grants and Contracts provides extensive information and services to faculty seeking research dollars.

CLAS grant proposals require the signatures of the Chair and Dean. When a grant proposal requires an institutional match, the Dean’s Office will ask the Chair’s opinion on the importance of that proposal relative to other proposals in the department. CLAS requires 5% of the research salary be paid for by the grant (though this may be waived for small grants). For a faculty member to receive a funded course release, the Dean’s Office requires 10% of salary for the first course release and 15% for each subsequent course release.

New Small Grants Program

Faculty are eligible to receive one of these grants in a 12-month period. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

Presentation and Publication grants provide up to $1,000 to assist with sharing completed (or near-completed) research and creative work with other scholars via conference presentation or publication. The award can be used to assist with conference and travel expenses to present research at a conference or invited seminar or to assist with costs associated with publication such as subvention or the production of graphics or art for a book, or open access fees or page charges for an article accepted for publication.

Research Launch or Completion grants provide up to $1,000 in funding to assist with expenses related to furthering work on a new or ongoing research/creative project. These funds can be used to cover a wide range of expenses including (but not limited to) travel to collect data or work with a collaborator, RA funding, purchase of necessary books, software or data, participant incentives, and equipment or supplies necessary for research.
