Associate Vice Chancellor for Undergraduate Experiences and English Professor Jeff Franklin’s book Spirit Matters: Occult Beliefs, Alternative Religions, and the Crisis of Faith in Victorian Britain (Cornell UP, 2018) was designated by the American Library Association as a “Choice Outstanding Academic Title” in 2018. Franklin also was invited by Rissho Kosei-kai, an international Buddhist denomination, to prepare a paper for the 24th annual International Lotus Sutra Seminar. He was funded to deliver that paper, titled “Contexts of Reception: The Lotus Sūtra in Nineteenth-Century Europe, and What They Overlooked,” in Tokyo in June 2019.
