As a New Directions Student, you have the opportunity to build experience through paid or unpaid internships that count as credit toward your degree or certificate. Along the way, you'll connect with fellow students already working in the field, meet alumni, and build relationships with community partners.

Local Government Best and Brightest Fellowship Program

The Department of Local Affairs Best and Brightest Management Fellowship Program places New Directions graduate students with counties or municipalities across the state for a two-year, paid local government experience while they simultaneously earn their Master's degree. The fellowship is designed to meet the needs of communities, engage future leaders, and meet students where they are in their professional development, connecting them to community work in public service. The Fellowship pays $57,000 year one, $63,000 year two, with a $3,000 bonus for each year completed. Apply by March of each year for July start.

Govern for America

The GFA Fellowship is a two-year program that activates and supports emerging leaders to make government work for all of us by placing them into full-time, paid government jobs and providing the training, mentorship, and community needed to use their skills to create better outcomes. As a Fellow, you will bridge community needs with government systems to drive strategic and innovative approaches to unique challenges in government policymaking and implementation – and achieve more equitable, community-centered policy outcomes. Applications are due annually in January.
