Project Story: This TW team collaborated with AWP on two deliverables. The first was a flyer about Domestic Violence Awareness Month (October), and the second was an informational brochure about domestic violence and the services AWP offers. To compose these deliverables, the TW interviewed AWP stakeholders, studied past communications, created document mock-ups, user-tested their mock-ups, revised their final brochures and flyers, and translated the documents into English and Spanish versions.

Project: Girls Inc Ambassador Handbook 

Community Partner: Girls Inc of Metro Denver (Denver, CO)

CU Denver Writing Team: Reed Albrittain, Jack Aldrich,& Samantha Valquez

Project Story: The Technical Writing team was tasked with revising and reimagining the handbook that Girls Inc of Metro Denver distribute to their ambassadors. Ambassadors are middle school and high school students who create original content for Girls Inc and publish that content on social media and other digital channels. The handbook should introduce ambassadors to Girls Inc’s overall mission and instruct ambassadors on how to post their writing to Girls Inc digital channels. The Technical Writing team interviewed various stakeholders and handbook users, designed handbook mock-ups, tested these mock-ups with users, and collaborated with Girls Inc to produce a new handbook.

Project: Children’s First International 2020 Annual report

Community Partner: Children’s Future International (Denver, CO and Battambang, Cambodia)

Project Story: Each December, Children’s Future International (CFI) publishes an annual report for their supporters and volunteers. The annual report highlights CFI’s mission and impact and describes, with metrics and images, how CFI has served their community; the 2020 report needed to focus on how the organization has been impacted by and has responded to the coronavirus pandemic. This writing team reviewed CFI’s past reports as well as an early 2020 report as your starting points, assessed the effectiveness of past annual reports, proposed a plan to compose CFI’s 2020 report, carried out stakeholder interviews and organizational research, and collaborated with CFI to produce the organization’s 2020 report.

Project: ESRI Storymap 

Community Partner: Community R.I.S.E (Westminster, CO)

Project Story: Community RISE is a collaboration between the City of Westminster and CU Denver's InWorks Studio. The project seeks to implement a Human-Centered Design, participatory process wherein neighborhoods define the current problems and challenges they are facing in relationship to COVID-19 and then brainstorm, iterate, design/prototype, and propose solutions to these problems.

The first stage of this process involved neighborhood action teams coming together to define their challenges. One tool that teams are using to define challenges is a collaborative mapping project, where neighborhood teams map their neighborhoods and the problems they face. They're not just mapping the streets and physical structures, but also the people who live there, the communities that have developed, the informal resources that different individuals and groups draw from, the history embedded in physical spaces, and the policies, rules, and systems that choreograph how people move through and act within their neighborhoods.

This technical writing team attended neighborhood action team meetings (all virtual), conducted interviews, and captured these emerging discussions on the map-making and story-telling platform, ESRI Story Maps. The final map serves as a story of the different challenges Westminster residents are facing and as a jumping-off point to begin ideating solutions.

Project: Usability Tests & Reports

In this semester project, student teams partnered with local organizations to conduct usability tests of the organizations’ websites and write research-informed recommendations reports. Student teams conducted heuristic evaluations of the websites. Then, they interviewed stakeholders, designed usability tests, conducted report usability tests, analyzed results, and delivered usability reports and recommendations.
