Robert Damrauer Endowed Scholarship in Chemistry

The Robert Damrauer Endowed Scholarship in Chemistry was established to honor Dr Robert “Bob” Damrauer’s countless contributions to the department and university and his career as a champion for both students and chemistry education over the last 40 years.

The Robert Damrauer Endowed Scholarship in Chemistry recognizes and supports current or returning University of Colorado Denver undergraduate students majoring in chemistry in good academic standing who are at risk of leaving the major due to various exigencies including family responsibilities, financial difficulties, etc. Also eligible are superior chemistry undergraduate and graduate chemistry majors in good academic standing bound for a Ph.D. program in chemistry.

The application deadline is 04/20/24. Scholarship awards will be made during the Fall semester of 2024. The number of scholarships and the award amounts vary, based on the endowment distribution. The Chemistry Department Awards Committee will review each application against the published criteria in order to select the scholarship winner(s) and amount(s). Traditionally, one scholarship has been awarded per year in the amount of $2500. As the endowment increases, additional scholarships may be awarded.

Evaluation Criteria

* First preference and consideration shall be given to undergraduate students majoring in chemistry in good academic standing, who are in danger of dropping from the chemistry program because of various exigencies (family responsibilities, financial difficulties, etc., but not scholastic difficulties).

* Second preference and consideration shall be given to undergraduate students majoring in chemistry, who have had to drop out of the school in the last five years, but were previously in good standing, assuming they left the chemistry program because of various exigencies (family responsibilities, financial difficulties, etc., but not scholastic difficulties).

* Third preference and consideration shall be given to undergraduate and graduate students majoring in chemistry, who have clearly demonstrated excellence in their chemistry studies and are planning to enter a chemistry PhD program within a year. Significant progress in independent research is a strong indicator of excellence.

* If no suitable candidates from the above categories can be identified, the Chemistry Department Awards Committee should use its judgement in awarding scholarships, taking into consideration both the welfare of students and the finances of the scholarship fund.

It is fully intended that the Robert Damrauer Endowed Scholarship in Chemistry provide as much support for students as its finances will allow and that flexibility be given to the Chemistry Department Awards Committee, so their action can make a difference in students’ lives.
