Prof. Hailing Jin, PhD
Abstract
Dr. Jin’s research focuses on RNA regulation, extracellular vesicles, and antimicrobial peptides in plant–microbe interactions, with applications in eco-friendly disease control for sustainable crop protection. Dr. Jin’s laboratory discovered that diverse classes of RNA, including small RNAs, mRNAs, and other noncoding RNAs, can traffic bidirectionally between plants and their pathogens to regulate gene expression and cellular processes across organismal boundaries. Her team subsequently revealed that extracellular vesicles (EVs) serve as key vehicles mediating this cross-kingdom RNA communication, uncovering a fundamental mechanism of interorganismal communication and helping establish a new paradigm for understanding host–pathogen interactions. More recently, her group discovered EV-mediated RNA trafficking between bacteria and fungi, further broadening the scope of this biological paradigm. Cross-kingdom and cross-species RNA communication has now been observed across all kingdoms of life, fundamentally reshaping our understanding of interorganismal communication. Dr. Jin’s laboratory also demonstrated that many fungal pathogens can efficiently take up environmental RNAs and extracellular vesicles, providing a mechanistic foundation for the development of spray-induced gene silencing (SIGS) technologies as a sustainable strategy for crop disease control.
