February is Black History Month, a time to celebrate the successes of African Americans and recognize their powerful role in U.S. history. CU Denver’s Black Student Services has created a variety of events to address issues important to our Black student community. All students, faculty, and staff are welcome and encouraged to bring their own experiences to the conversations. Click below for information on upcoming events.

Dr. Rachel E. Harding, Associate Professor and Chair of the department of Ethnic Studies, will be sharing a few autobiographical reflections and thoughts about connections among people of African descent around the world. All are invitied to attend and encouraged to share questions, ideas, and personal experiences.

Black Student Services and the Office of Global Education are hosting a panel to discuss opportunities for students to study abroad while exploring their self-identity, career development, and the experiences of traveling abroad as a Black student.

This year’s theme, The Power of Connection, serves as an opportunity for students to learn about what diversity looks like in their field and recommendations on how to show up with your identity. Students will walk away empowered, knowing how to land jobs when they represent the minority and to address issues they face. They will leave with many connections and resources needed for the workforce.

Our department advisors are here to help you navigate registration for PBHL classes or any other questions you might have about completing your PBHL undergraduate degree. Ashlyn is available for Zoom meetings by appointment. Alternatively, you can email questions to advisors at PBHLAdvisors@ucdenver.edu. In all communication with advisors, please include your name, student ID, and question. 

This year, advocacy day will focus on climate change advocacy and capacity-building efforts.  Participants will also hear about other public health policy priorities including behavioral health, access-to-care and health equity. All participants are welcome to stay longer at the Capitol to see the House and Senate floor debates, listen into a committee hearing, and see our state lawmakers hard at work! Click here for more information and to RSVP.

The Center for Identity & Inclusion | Diversity, Equity & Inclusion offices support programs such as Black Student Services where they offer a uniquely-designed network of support services to assist students in all phases of their educational career at CU Denver. Some services they provide include, but are not limited to: 

• Assistance in applying for and gaining admission to the University
• Cultural events and activities to enhance students' cross-cultural understanding, self-concept, and cultural identity
• Sponsorship of active student organizations

Math and Stat Support, formerly the Zenas Hartvigson Memoiral Math Education Resource Center (MERC), offers CU Denver students free drop-in assistance with mathematics and statistics course. The center offers a variety of resources including free workshops, how-to guides, online consultations, and more. The Career Center strives to engage students in career conversations early and often, in order to help you understand what brought you to college, how you can build experiences and relationships, and to realize your professional potential. Some valuable services the Career Center offers include interview prep, networking opportunities, resume tips, grad school prep, and career exploration.
