Public Health Department

Outstanding Undergraduate in Public Health Deadline February 20

In Spring 2020, the Health and Behavioral Sciences department will recognize up to two graduating students by awarding them "Outstanding Undergraduate in Public Health." This award is intended to honor Public Health majors who demonstrate an outstanding commitment to public health during their time at CU Denver. In addition to performing well in public health coursework, this commitment could be demonstrated through public health-related contributions to campus or the community and/or leadership in the Public Health program. Please reference the link below for more information about eligibility and how to apply or visit our website to learn more about previous recipients. Submit your application by email to HBSAdminSupport@ucdenver.edu by February 20, 2021.

Public Health Elective Opportunties

Up to 3 Credits for Directed Research on Mask Usage on Campus

Dr. Nicole Tuitt is leading a PBHL 4880, Directed Research course (1-3 credits depending on student involvement) in Spring 2021. The project involves collecting data on face-mask usage on the CU Denver campus. Students will engage in measuring the proportion of people who are wearing a mask correctly at campus locations. Observational data will be collected across a range of spaces and times. Selected observation points on the Auraria campus will be visited during different times of the day and on different days, on a rotational basis. If desired, students can be involved in data analysis. Please email Dr. Tuitt by February 3rd at: nicole.tuitt@cuanschutz.edu and complete the special processing form to register. 

Complete Three Credits in Just Four Weeks over Maymester

PBHL 4021 Community Health Assessment with Marisa Westbrook introduces applied methods of public health practice to benefit community organizations. The course will cover systematic methods and approaches to assessing health needs, working with community partners, and interpreting, analyzing, and presenting health data. The course runs May 18-June 4, Monday-Thursday 8:30-12:20pm, remotely. Contact marisa.westbrook@ucdenver.edu with questions. Registration begins March 3.

Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP)

The Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP) is a competitive grant program managed by the Office of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities. UROP awards support original student-driven research, creative, and other scholarly activities under the mentorship of a CU Denver faculty mentor. Full grants of up to $1200/student are awarded each spring. The full grant deadline is Friday, March 5, 2021, 5:00 p.m.

Non-CU Paid Summer Internship

The Praxis Project is excited to accept applications for its paid summer Health Justice Internship. The Health Justice Internship is a great opportunity to engage in health justice policy, public health training, organizational capacity building, and field organizing. This is a remote position, and the pay is $19-21/hour depending on experience.

UROP Professional Development Funds

UROP Professional Development Funds are available to support undergraduate attendance at virtual conferences and workshops during Spring 2021. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until April 16, 2021 or until the funding pool is exhausted. Students can request up to $400 to cover the cost of attendance at virtual events that will aid in their exploration of research and creative activities. All awarded funds must be spent by April 30, 2021. Funding decisions will be provided to the student and faculty sponsor within two weeks of submission and funds will become available shortly thereafter.

Virtual Interdisciplinary Conference at CU Denver

Student Activisms and Activisions in the Age of COVID: Be a part of a virtual interdisciplinary conference organized to share ideas about activisms in the COVID era and win a $250 scholarship. All Public Health undergraduate students are encouraged to submit 200 word proposals for seven-minute lightning talks. Six speakers will be selected to give a flash presentation on what activisms are or have become meaningful for them over the last year. Presentations must be no longer than seven minutes. Slides and visual aids are optional. Question/answer and discussion forum to follow moderated by two CLAS graduate students.

Deadline to submit: February 26, 2021

Event date and time: March 25, 2021, 3:30-5:00pm
