Leo P Bruederle, Associate Professor in the Department of Integrative Biology, has published two articles as part of the Global Carex Group (GCG), an international group of collaborators conducting research on one of the largest genera of flowering plants worldwide. "Making Carex monophyletic (Cyperaceae, tribe Cariceae): a new broader circumscription," published in the Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society provides argument and evidence for a broader circumscription of genus Carex to include approximately 2000 species representing five genera previously recognized as distinct with the sedge family. "Specimens at the Center: An Informatics Workflow and Toolkit for Specimen-level analysis of NCBI GenBank Data" was recently published in Systematic Botany. Therein, the GCG describes tools and methodology developed for building phylogenetic trees with individual specimens at the tips, rather than species, thereby allowing for a wider range of inferences.
