Gary Olson, Senior Instructor in the Department of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences, will co-PI on a new National Science Foundation award (PI of the award is Heather Johnson from the School of Education & Human Development). The project, titled "Promoting Mathematical Reasoning and Transforming Instruction in College Algebra,” is a multi-institution project between s Santa Fe Community College, Texas State University - San Marcos, and Metropolitan State University of Denver. The award starts on October 1, and runs through September of 2023, and the he total amount over three years is $1,599,774. The project aims to address a significant problem in U.S. undergraduate mathematics education: the overemphasis on finding the right answer. Specifically, it intends to decrease the emphasis on answer finding, and increase the emphasis on mathematical reasoning in high enrollment lower division mathematics courses.
