Dr. Tammy Stone, Professor of Archaeology, Retires

Dr. Tammy Stone, now Professor Emerita of Archaeology, marked a milestone when she retired in December 2023. Dr. Stone came to CU Denver in 1992 after receiving her PhD in Archaeology from Arizona State University and her certification from the Register of Professional Archaeologists. Her research examined identity, factionalism, and alliance formation among the Southwestern Pueblos. She chaired the Anthropology department numerous times and two other departments, and also served as Associate and Interim Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Her excellent teaching won her three College teaching awards, and her distinguished research won her the College Research Award and Outstanding Faculty Award. We wish her great joy as she pursues her interests in painting and volunteering and enjoys her time with family in her retirement.

Dr. Charles Musiba, Professor of Anthropology, Joins Duke University

Dr. Charles Musiba, formerly a Professor of Anthropology, retired from CU Denver in the spring of 2024. Dr. Musiba joined our faculty in 2005 after receiving his PhD in physical anthropology from the University of Chicago in 1999. Dr. Musiba has contributed significantly to our understanding of human evolution with an active field research program at Laetoli and Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania, sites with some of our hominid ancestors' best-preserved fossilized bones and footprints. He has also worked extensively with UNESCO and the International Council on Monuments and Sites to decolonize world heritage sites. He has also been known as a champion of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives at CU. We are excited for our students to continue to work with him in Tanzania, and we wish him the best as he embarks on his next chapter at Duke University!

Connie Turner, “Heart of the Department,” Retires

Congratulations to our much-beloved Program Assistant, Connie Turner, who retired from CU Denver in the summer of 2023! For 30 years, Connie had been the heart of the department, keeping our affairs in order, keeping us in line, and always standing up for what is right.  Faculty describe her as “remarkable,” “genuinely caring,” and “the foundation of the department.” At the same time, students appreciate her creating a “welcoming atmosphere" and describe her as “one of the warmest, most helpful people you will ever meet,” “a friend,” and “loved by many.” We are grateful for her service and wish her the best with this new chapter of her life! Former faculty member Lorna Rhodes has created a fund in Connie’s honor.
