Anthropological methods—whether Ethnographic or Archaeological—are vital skillsets in many fields—from public health, education, urban planning and program evaluation to cultural resource management, historic preservation, and museums. Our certificate programs in Ethnographic Methods and Archaeological Methods allow you to gain hands-on training you can apply in the fields of your choice. Whether you’re learning how to understand humans in the present or excavate our past, you’ll acquire impactful skills that will strengthen your position in the workforce.

With its focus on documenting and understanding peoples experiences, opinions, and behaviors, an understanding of Ethnographic Methods is vital in fields as diverse as public health, urban planning, policy analysis, program evaluation, product development, and user design. The Department of Anthropology’s Certificate in Ethnographic Methods—available to undergraduate, graduate, and non-degree students--provides students with training and practice in designing, conducting, and analyzing ethnographic research. We emphasize hands-on fieldwork skills to help students land jobs in health care research, public health, nonprofits, the technology sector, and beyond. This certificate program not only provides students with a thorough understanding of the principles of ethnography but also introduces students to the ethical debates it raises and provides them a toolkit of other useful inductive approaches. The certificate is designed to allow students to combine ethnographic methods with other methodological tools, such as quantitative methods, Geographic Information Systems, and digital ethnography.

How to Apply

The certificate is available to students in any undergraduate or graduate degree program as well as non-degree seeking students.

Undergraduate Students

First, please provide the required information on the CLAS Undergraduate Certificate of Intent to Declare Form to request a CLAS certificate be added to your student record. Once added, you will be able to run a certificate degree audit. The certificate degree audit should be used in collaboration with the Certificate Advisor, Dr. Tiffany Terneny, to ensure successful completion of the requirements. Once you are ready to confirm completion, please fill out the CLAS Certificate Notification Completion Form. For more information, please contact Dr. Tiffany Terneny (Tiffany.Terneny.@ucdenver.edu).

Graduate Students

After completion of the required courses, students currently enrolled in a MA program must print and attach the completed Graduate Certificate Completion Form to an unofficial transcript. These documents should be submitted to Dr. Jamie Hodgkins at Jamie.Hodgkins@ucdenver.edu by the deadline to submit applications for candidacy of the semester in which you intend to graduate. (Deadlines vary each semester but are on census date). If the application is approved, a certificate will be mailed to the student after final grades are posted for the semester. Non-Degree Students

Apply here if you wish to complete the Graduate Certificate in Ethnographic Methods as a non- degree student. After your application has been approved, you will be able to enroll for the certificate courses.

Curriculum

This is a 12-credit program. Students start with two courses—ANTH 4/5063, “Ethnographic Methods,” which provides a sound methodological training—and ANTH 4/5230, “Fieldwork Methods,” which allows them to put their skills into practice. They then round this out with two
electives to focus their methodological training on skill-sets or issues of their choice.

Examples of electives, according to specialization, include:

Health Equity and Social Justice – the methods and ethical issues involved in conducting health research with immigrants, refugees, the unhoused, racialized minorities, and other marginalized groups.

Participatory Research – community-based research, participatory methodologies, digital ethnography, Indigenous Methodologies, decolonizing ethnography.

Qualitative Analysis – designing and conducting interviews, qualitative data analysis, textual content analysis

Quantitative Analysis - survey research, statistics, latent variables, data analysis with SPSS.

GIS & Spatial Statistics – community mapping, using GIS workstations

Community Health & Public Policy - community health assessment, program evaluation, implementation science, policy analysis, using federal data

The certificate is offered on-campus. Certificates will be awarded at the end of the semester in which the student satisfies all requirements.

The Department of Anthropology’s Certificate in Archaeological Methods—offered at both undergraduate and graduate levels—will provide you the archaeological skills to gain a job in a field of your choice, from government to cultural resource management to academia to museums. Whether you decide to specialize in material culture analysis, human or animal osteological analysis, field survey, statistical research, museum, or GIS research, the Certificate in Archaeological Methods will allow you to demonstrate a sub-focus in archaeological methods within your Anthropology degree, or to demonstrate your preparedness for archaeological field schools or archaeologically-focused employment alongside your degree. This Certificate also allows non-degree seeking students already employed in the private or public sector to update their knowledge of archaeological methods.
