Spring course registration is underway! The Sociology Department is pleased to announce a new course being offered for the first time this Spring. Sociology 1212: Career Success in the Social Sciences introduces students to careers in the social sciences and helps them plan for success. Class activities center on learning about career opportunities, identifying pathways through the major best matched to career interests, and developing strategies for being a successful and engaged sociology student. This is an online course. We hope to see you there!

CU Denver’s Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR) has a variety of funding opportunities available to support your research. The EURēCA! Grants program is a competitive grant program managed by the Office of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities. EURēCA Grants support original student-driven research, creative, and other scholarly activities under the mentorship of a CU Denver | Anschutz faculty mentor. Grants of $500 are administered each October and February to be used for project supplies, conference and workshop registration, travel costs, and/or stipends. The Spring application deadline closes February 9, 2024.

OUR’s EURēCA! Student Assistant program leverages federal-work study dollars and grant funds to provide entry-level salary support to undergraduates working with mentors on a research project. is a way for students currently in an unpaid research position to jointly apply with their mentor for the EURēCA! Student Assistant Program. This is an introductory program that new to the research and creative enterprise. Application does not guarantee acceptance into the EURēCA! Student Assistant Program.

OUR’s EURēCA! Summer Fellows program is a highly competitive summer research program that provides a small number of CU Denver undergraduates with stipend support to conduct original research, creative, or other scholarly activities in collaboration with a CU Denver | Anschutz faculty mentor. These eight-week fellowships last through June and July and include weekly professional development training, cohort meetups, and other learning opportunities. The EURēCA! Fellows program is open to all disciplines.

CU Denver’s new Honors Scholars Program (HSP) has launched! The certificate program provides highly motivated students with unique learning experiences aimed to stimulate curiosity and critical thinking with flexible and personalized learning options. This program allows students to set their own honors goals and design their own plans. Students can combine challenging coursework and co-curricular and extra-curricular activities to work toward their goals to earn a certificate in honors.

AmeriCorps is seeking applications for a service year opportunity involving care for infants and children up to age six at risk for abuse and neglect in Houston, TX. Hands of Hope AmeriCorps Members will work collaboratively with other AmeriCorps Members in the home to ensure that children’s physical, emotional, and mental needs are met. Members will serve these vulnerable children throughout a 12-month commitment, living in a private, gated community (at no cost) and receiving a living allowance.

The University of Colorado Denver Creative Writing Reading Series presents Randall Mann & Stephen Sexton for a reading of their work on Wednesday, November 8, 6pm in the Zenith Room (Tivoli 640). There will be a reception after the reading at Rhein Haus (1415 Market St), including food and drinks.

A queer poet, critic, and medical writer, Randall Mann is the author of six poetry collections, most recently Deal: New & Selected Poems (Copper Canyon, 2023). He has received the Kenyon Review Prize in Poetry and the J. Howard and Barbara M. J. Wood Prize from Poetry magazine, and his books have been shortlisted for the Lambda Literary Award and the California Book Award. He lives in San Francisco.

Northern Irish poet Stephen Sexton is the author of two poetry collections: If All the World and Love Were Young (Penguin, 2019) and Cheryl’s Destinies (2021). He has won the UK National Poetry Competition, the Forward Prize for Best First Collection, the E. M. Forster Award, and the Rooney Prize for Irish Literature. He teaches at Queen’s University Belfast and lives in Derry.

The Israel-Hamas war has grabbed the world's attention for the past month. Both Israel and Palestine have their own vibrant news media. Important insights into the ongoing conflict can be gained by reviewing those sources. Here, for example, are the Jerusalem Post and The Palestine Chronicle.

All media sources carry their own biases. That doesn't mean they are all equal. (Media Bias/Fact Check provides ratings of news sources, while NewsGuard tracks misinformation online). And that doesn't mean we shouldn't stay informed. Our democratic society depends on it.
