Requirements for Admission

Application to the MA program is open to all students holding a BA, BS or higher degree in any field. Students without prior training in sociology, but with otherwise exemplary records, may be admitted, but may be required to make up deficiencies without graduate credit.

Recommended Academic Standards

Although the department does not require a specific GPA for admission, the recommended standards include:

  • a combined GPA of at least 3.3 for all courses taken at the undergraduate or graduate level prior to admission.
  • a combined GPA of at least 3.5 for all sociology courses at the undergraduate or graduate level prior to admission.

Application Deadline - Next Application Deadline is February 15, 2019!​

New Sociology MA students are accepted for Fall admission only. For best consideration, and to be considered for funding opportunities, all application materials should be submitted by February 15th. Applications received after February 15th will continue to be reviewed on a rolling basis until June 15th.

Application Materials

  • Complete application form online.
  • Three letters of recommendation (at least two must be from academic/professional sources). Download letter of recommendation form​.
  • One copy of official transcripts from all schools where BA and graduate credit hours were taken.
  • Statement of purpose and goal of graduate study (Part 2, Question 6 on application).
  • Writing sample (click here for criteria).
  • Optional: GRE score not required, but may be submitted to aid application file.
  • International students: TOEFL score must be a minimum of 525. Please contact International Education for additional requirements and an International Student Application.

Is There Financial Aid For Graduate Students?

The Department of Sociology has some teaching assistant and research assistant positions available for MA students. The Department Chair, after consulting with faculty, will determine which students qualify to be teaching and research assistants.
