Spanish Minor

Why Minor in Spanish?

Minoring in a language helps you stand out from your competition in the job market. Some examples of career fields supported by a Spanish minor are: health care, education, social work, counseling, interpreting, translation, law enforcement, government, banking, hospitality, law, travel and tourism, international and domestic business, arts and media, and diplomacy.

Students who speak Spanish at home can also benefit from our program through increased confidence in their formal writing and speaking proficiency and a demonstrated credential verifying their expertise. 

Admission and Grade Requirements:

Declare the Minor with your general academic advisor, then get in touch with your Spanish Advisor.

Students interested in a Minor in Spanish must maintain a minimum overall GPA of 2.3, and a GPA of 2.5 in Spanish. The minimum grade acceptable in courses applied to the Minor is C- (1.7). No course taken on a pass/fail basis may be credited toward the Minor in Spanish.

It is important that students enrolled in the Minor in Spanish have their transcripts reviewed by their departmental advisor (based on student’s last name) before enrolling in their final 30 credit hours at CU Denver, to avoid a delay in graduation.

Residency Requirement:

Students must take at least 9 hours toward the minor from CU Denver faculty.

Required Courses:

5 Courses (15 credit hours): Must include at least one Culture and Civilization course, numbered SPAN 32xx (3 credit hours). The other courses can be any SPAN course numbered 3000 and above (12 credit hours). 

Please note the following prerequisites:

SPAN 2120 (or equivalent proficiency) is a prerequisite for all courses numbered 3xxx. SPAN 2120 (or 2110) do not count towards the minor.
