Bachelor of Science in Mathematics with Honors

The mathematical and statistical sciences department recognizes students who complete the undergraduate program with distinction. Contact a departmental advisor at math.advising@ucdenver.edu to express your interest in graduating with departmental honors.

To be eligible for graduation with honors at the cum laude level a student must graduate with an overall GPA of 3.2 or better for the last 60 credit hours taken at the University of Colorado Denver and either:

  • Option 1: Have a GPA of 3.7 or better in upper-division math courses taken at CU Denver, OR
  • Option 2: Have a GPA of 3.5 or better in upper-division math courses taken at CU Denver and complete an honors project.

To be eligible for graduation with honors at the magna cum laude level a student must graduate with an overall GPA of 3.2 or better for the last 60 credit hours taken at University of Colorado Denver and either:

  • Option 1: Have a GPA of 3.85 or better in upper-division math courses taken at CU Denver, OR
  • Option 2: Have a GPA of 3.7 or better in upper-division math courses taken at CU Denver and complete an honors project.

To be eligible for graduation with honors at the summa cum laude level a student must graduate with an overall GPA of 3.2 or better for the last 60 credit hours taken at University of Colorado Denver and satisfy ALL of the following:

  • Have a GPA of 3.7 or better in upper-division math courses taken at CU Denver.
  • Complete an high quality honors project.
  • Receive a faculty vote of approval for this highest level of honors. When discussing the vote, faculty will take into account additional considerations such as overall quality of the candidate’s Honors Project, community outreach, and other extra-curricular activities relating to mathematics.

What is an Honors Project?

The Honors Project involves an individual research effort that demonstrates a depth of mathematical knowledge, critical and/or creative thinking, and proficiency in communicating mathematics. The student must write a report summarzing the project and must give an oral presentation about the project. The project will be evaluated by a committee of at least two full-time faculty members, one of whom may also by the student's advisor on the project.
