This procedure is based upon the document Instructions: Credit by Examination, provided to the Department of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences by the Registrar’s office in June of 2014. If the Registrar’s policy changes then these instructions may no longer be valid.
A student may obtain credit for math courses by passing a comprehensive final exam for that course. Note that some upper division and graduate courses do not have a comprehensive final exam, and credit by exam may not be possible for these courses. The exams are given during final exam week when the course has its respective final exam scheduled, and exams at other times may not be possible. The student must pay the full tuition for that course before taking the exam. There is no tuition refund if the student does not pass the exam.
The exam can be taken only during a term in which the student is regularly enrolled as a degree student.
The procedure a student follows is:
- Obtain an application for Credit by Examination at the Records and Registration Office.
- Complete the required information on the application and take the application to the dean, math department Chair or Associate Chair, and the instructor for signature approval.
- After obtaining the required signatures, the signed application is returned to the Bursar’s Office to assess tuition. No Refund will be made.
- The instructor will not give an examination until the student presents the application with the payment section completed by the Bursar’s Office.
- The examination, evaluated by the instructor, will be maintained on file in the Department of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences Administrative Assistant’s office.
- The department will return the white copy of the application to the Record’s Office upon satisfactory completion of the examination. Courses will be listed under Credit by Examination on the transcript by course number, course title, and number of hours received. No grade will be recorded.
