Congratulations to the newest members of Sigma Iota Rho's Eta Gamma Chapter: Chloe Lehnerz, Olivia Fambrini, and Michelle Dicker. Sigma Iota Rho is the International Studies Association’s official honor society at four-year colleges and universities, and we are delighted to honor our newest members. The students we recognize have distinguished themselves through high academic achievement, a passion for international studies, and a commitment to international engagement.

As an academic field, International Studies has existed since the end of World War I. In the broadest sense, our program is committed to providing students an interdisciplinary understanding of complex international issues and the underlying political, economic, technological, and socio-cultural drivers that are shaping our world. While the field of International Studies has roots in the social sciences, its contemporary focus is on the opportunities and challenges of participating in an increasingly globalized, mediated, and multicultural world.

In 1983, American University in Washington D.C., established the first chapter of Sigma Iota Rho, and International Studies students with outstanding academic records were invited to become the first twenty members. In 1989, the International Studies Association recognized Sigma Iota Rho and the honor society was officially incorporated. Today, Sigma Iota Rho maintains dozens of chapters and thousands of members throughout the United States and abroad.

Public recognition of the best and the brightest students in International Studies is one of Sigma Iota Rho’s main purposes. Membership is intended not only to enhance the credentials of its members but is also meant to encourage a life-long devotion to a better understanding of the world we live in and to continuing support for and engagement in education, service, and occupational activities that reflect the mission of Sigma Iota Rho. Membership aims to internalize the belief that our purpose for undertaking International Studies is not only to position ourselves to succeed in a globalized society, but also to make the world we live in a better place through our contributions in our work and day-to-day life.

Congratulations to Chloe, Olivia, and Michelle.
