INTS's Annual Careers Panel

Published: Nov. 25, 2019

On November 7th, International Studies hosted its annual Careers Panel with four guests who offered advice to current students on international careers. INTS alumna Brenda Mendoza-Ortega (2016) spoke about how she found a perfect job as Health Promotion Facilitator at CU School of Public Health that blended her passions in health and International Studies. She recommended students think about how all the different skills and issues in their International Studies degrees can apply to so many different careers. Tavis Tasto, our new Peace Corps recruiter encouraged students to go after all jobs that seem interesting, and cast their nets widely, even if they are worried that they are not qualified. He advises the Peace Corps as an ideal step after college for students looking to gain some international experience and some specific job skills, even if they are not sure what they want to do as a career. Ashley Warsh explained how she never thought she’d find herself working in the Department of Agriculture, but that she loves her job, loves the people she works with and gets to meet around the world. Her own personal connection, growing up in an Ag family, connects to her work in that sector as well as her degree in International Business. Kim Lemme, who is Director of Program Learning and Influence at Water for People, gave an excellent example of a meandering path of various jobs in her 20s that led her back to graduate school and a career that began in her 30s. There is clearly no one path for finding exciting International Studies careers! All four said excellent communication skills (speaking, listening, and writing) were the most important skills that students should develop to use in their careers.
