On November 3rd, International Studies joined the Latin America Center, the Department of Political Science and the Romero Theatre troupe to co-sponsor the performance of the play “De Novo” by New York theatre company, Houses on the Moon, at St. Cajetan’s church on campus. Performed in Spanish and English, the play examined the life of a teenager as he travelled from Guatemala City to Arizona, LA, and finally to immigration court in Denver. The play was written entirely from immigration court transcripts, interviews, and letters and was a powerful exposition of the choices migrants face, the connections among gangs in LA and Central America, and the process of applying for asylum. A large audience from the community and the campus attended and a thoughtful talk-back after the performance led by Professor James Walsh included immigration lawyer, Arturo Jimenez, who knew the case and the characters in the play first hand. The discussion used the play to explore law, immigration, and ways to offer support for those seeking asylum in the immigration system.
