News and Announcements - PBHL Newsletter October 23, 2020

The Public Health Program here at CU Denver has granted me the opportunity to not only fulfill prerequisites for medical school, but simultaneously learn the importance and implications Public Health has not only at a community level but an individual one as well. The challenging professors and course load forced me to think critically and always consider the complexity of issues facing Public Health as many dimensions must be addressed for a successful intervention. This program has set me up to use my voice as an advocate for the underserved as a Public Health Practitioner and future Physician which I could not thank CU enough for.  

In a class of over 100 I was visible. In a class of 100 during my introduction to public health class, I would tell my professor what I wanted to with my career. She would say “I’ll get you there”. This is what the public health department at the University of Colorado Denver was to me.  That professor took the time and years later would be the one to write my letter of recommendation for a Master of Public Health Application. This department truly sees you, listens to you, and provides the tools you’ll need on your path. As my time here comes to end, I look back with warmth and gratitude and I feel forever indebted to the many caring and talented individuals that taught me on my journey. As I continue, I will lead by your examples. As a public health practitioner I will strive to teach, listen, and truly make those near me feel visible.

• PBHL 2052, Global Demography and Health, Online, Ramirez (meets Core Curriculum International Perspectives requirement) 
  • Description: Examines current issues in population growth, fertility, mortality and migration in the United States and globally. Introduces students to the basic tools of demography and encourages them to think critically about the causes and consequences of population change. 
• PBHL 3002, Ethnicity, Health, and Social Justice, MW 9:30-10:45am Remote, Nelson
  • Description: Surveys core issues contributing to racial or ethnic minority differences in health status. Historical and contemporary U.S. health and social policy, including the areas of environmental health, sexual and reproductive health, children and immigrants, are examined. 
• PBHL 3010, Human Sexuality and Public Health, Online, O'Connell
  • Description: The focus of this course is on human sexuality using a public health lens, examining a number of sexual health issues and their relationship to individual, familial, organizational, and social-level influences. Additionally, we will focus on identifying both primary prevention and intervention approaches to reducing sexual risk factors and increasing healthy behaviors. 
• PBHL 3031, Health, Human Biology and Behavior, Online, Scandlyn
  • Description: Introduces the study of human health and well-being, and the allied disciplines of epidemiology and demography. The course considers the nature of disease, health problems related to nutrition and the physical environment, and morbidity and mortality from an integrated “biobehavioral” perspective.

• October 25 - Last day to request a Pass/Fail grade. For more information about the modified grading policy for Fall 2020, refer to the Grading Policies website. This is also the last day to withdraw from a class through your student portal in UCD access.
• October 26 - First day to request to withdraw from a class using the late withdrawal form. The last day to use this form is December 2.
• November 2 - Registration opens for Spring 2021 classes through your student portal in UCD access. This is also your first opportunity to apply for Spring 2021 graduation.

All Public Health students are invited to attend the ​Colloquium Series for the PhD program in Health and Behavioral Sciences. The speakers have been selected by Dr. Meng Li, the Director of the Undergraduate Program in Public Health and cover topics related to research and public health.

• Oct 30: "Interpersonal and Institutional Discrimination among U.S. Adults with Disability" - Deborah Carr, Ph.D, Boston University, Sociology.

• Oct 29, 12:30-1:30pm: "Sexual Citizens: Social Science, Public Health, and the Future of Campus Sexual Assault Prevention" - Dr. Jennifer Hirsch, Professor of Sociomedical Sciences, Columbia’s Mailman School of Public Health Dr. Shamus Khan, Professor of Sociology, Columbia University. • Oct 29, 1:00-2:30pm:​ “CLAS Open Forum: Towards a Multiracial Democracy.” Millions of people across the country have been participating in Black Lives Matter protests and seeking resources on how to dismantle systemic racism. At the same time, efforts to suppress the vote disproportionately impact Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities; and executive orders target Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives. Join us in a discussion of how we can work together to build a multiracial democracy in a political moment filled with both possibility and peril. Register Online.
