Congratulations on a Successful Spring 2022 Semester

To our Spring 2022 Graduates, congratulations on completing your degree in Public Health! We applaud your perserverance through the unique challenges the past few years have presented. 

This will be the last PBHL newsletter until late July. Meanwhile, please make sure to keep an eye on your CU Denver email for ongoing updates regarding the Summer and Fall semesters. Our administrative staff and PBHL advisors will continue to be available throughout the summer to assist you with any questions you might have.

Summer 2022 PBHL Offerings

PBHL 3031 Health, Human Biology, and Behavior (3 credits) with Monica Adams introduces the multi-factorial nature of human health and well-being. Considers the influences of biology (genetics), behavior, environment, culture and social determinants, and health policy on the nature of disease and health problems from an integrated perspective. June 6-July 30 (Online). 

PBHL 3071 Global Topics in Sexual Reproductive Health (3 credits) with Leah Pauline surveys trends and determinants of sexual and reproductive health around the globe and in the United States. Examines the social and behavioral determinants of sexual and reproductive health and the influence of policy. June 6-July 30 (Online). 

PBHL 3081 Health in the City: Urban Health (3 credits) with Ivan Ramirez introduces urban health and the various factors of the physical, social and health environments that affect well-being and vulnerability of communities and neighborhoods in cities. June 6-July 30 (Online). 

PBHL 4200 The Global HIV/Aids Epidemic (3 credits) with Petros Vilakati provides a foundation for a critical analysis of HIV/AIDS in global context, concerning topics such as disease, the body, ethnicity/race, gender, sexuality, risk, addiction, power, and culture together with a set of ethnographic texts that explore the epidemic’s impact. June 6-July 30 (Online). 

Fall 2022 PBHL Offerings

PBHL 2052 Global Demography and Health (3 Credits) with Ivan Ramirez examines current issues in population growth, fertility, mortality and migration throughout the globe; introduces basic demographic tools; encourages critical thinking about the causes and consequences of population change.

PBHL 3031 Health, Human Biology and Behavior (3 Credits)  with Jean Scandlyn introduces the multi-factorial nature of human health and well-being. Considers the influences of biology (genetics), behavior, environment, culture and social determinants, and health policy on the nature of disease and health problems from an integrated perspective.

PBHL 3050 Decision Making (3 credits) with Meng Li discusses current research on decision making/behavioral economics, as well as its application to individual well-being and public policy. You will gain insights on how and why people can be irrational in their daily decisions.

PBHL 3091 Live Long and Prosper: Public Health & Aging (3 credits) with Ronica Rooks provides a broad overview of the interdisciplinary field of public health aging, ranging from individual attitudes and beliefs about aging to policies that aim to maximize health and well-being among older adults. A key focus is on the diversity that exists among older adults and the promotion of healthy aging for all by examining changes to social, behavioral, and biological functioning with age. Note: Although not required, it would be helpful for students to have taken a 2000-level course in public health.

Department of Epidemiology at the Colorado School of Public Health Virtual Seminar

A Virtuous Cycle: What We Learn from COVID-19 about Policies that Support Health, the Economy, and Equity

Overview: Dr. Raifman conducts research on how health and social polices shape population health and health disparities. Her current work is focused on evaluating policy responses to the COVID-19 pandemic and economic crisis. She created and leads the COVID-19 U.S. State Policy Database (CUSP, at statepolicies.com), tracking more than 200 state policy responses to the pandemic to facilitate rapid response research and journalism.
