Summer 2021 Course Registration Begins on Monday

Maymester Public Health Elective PBHL 4021

Maymester is your chance to complete 3 credits in just three weeks! Learn more about Maymester at CU Denver online. We are offering one course during the 2021 Maymester:

PBHL 4021 Community Health Assessment (3 credits) introduces applied methods of public health practice to benefit community organizations. The course will cover systematic methods and approaches to assessing health needs, working with community partners, and interpreting, analyzing, and presenting health data. Maymester (3 weeks), May 18-June 4, Monday-Thursday 8:30am-12:20pm (Remote).

Summer 2021 PBHL Offerings

PBHL 2052 Global Demography and Health (3 credits) with Ivan Ramirez examines current issues in population growth, fertility, mortality and migration in the USA and globally. Introduces students to the basic tools of demography and encourages them to think critically about the causes and consequences of population change. June 7-July 31 (Online). 

PBHL 3010 Human Sexuality and Public Health (3 credits) with Monica Adams focuses on  human sexuality using a public health lens, examining a number of sexual health issues and their relationship to individual, familial, organizational, and social-level influences. Identifies both primary prevention and intervention approaches to reducing sexual risk factors and increasing healthy behaviors. June 7-July 31 (Online). 

PBHL 4200 The Global HIV/Aids Epidemic (3 credits) with Petros Vilakati provides a foundation for a critical analysis of HIV/AIDS in global context, concerning topics such as disease, the body, ethnicity/race, gender, sexuality, risk, addiction, power, and culture together with a set of ethnographic texts that explore the epidemic’s impact. June 7-July 31 (Online). 

Funding Opportunities

EURēCA! 2021 Summer Fellowship

EURēCA! Fellows receive funding from the Office of Undergraduate Research & Creative Activities to conduct original research in collaboration with a faculty mentor. These eight-week fellowships last through June and July and include weekly professional development training. 

How it works:

  • Students work with their faculty mentor to complete a joint application
  • Fellowships last 8-weeks (June 7 - July 30, 2021)
  • Applicants can request up to 40hrs/week in stipend support 
  • Fellows attend professional development training and cohort meetups
  • Fellows present to the CU Denver community at the annual Summer Research Symposium

Applications for the Summer 2021 EURēCA! Fellows Program are due March 12.

Anschutz BIO - Summer Research Training Program

The Anschutz Biomedical Internship Opportunities program (Anschutz BIO) is a collective of paid research internships for CU Denver undergrads hosted by graduate programs at the Anschutz Medical Campus. Anschutz BIO interns gain experience in basic biomedical research, including cellular and molecular biology, neuroscience, and developmental biology, while receiving hands-on mentorship and professional development training. 

Anschutz BIO kicks off in June with the Summer Research Training Programs (SRTP). The SRTP is open to motivated CU Denver undergraduates majoring in life sciences who are interested in pursuing graduate school and/or a research career. Prior research experience is not a requirement to apply. Students belonging to groups traditionally excluded or underserved in academic research, including race, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, or gender, are highly encouraged to apply. Applications due March 12.

Paid Internship with PURPLE

The Psychiatry Undergraduate Research Program and Learning Experience (PURPLE) is looking for undergraduates and recent graduates (within 24 months of graduation) to join the paid psychiatry research internship and mentorship program. The cohort will take place digitally from May 24-August 16, 2021 in the Department of Psychiatry on the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus and at the Children's Hospital of Colorado. Applications are due March 29. Please e-mail the program director, Emmaly Perks, MA, CCRP, and program coordinator, Yunliang (Lily) Luo, BS, at PURPLE@ucdenver.edu if you have additional questions.

APHA Climate Justice Award

The Center for Climate, Health, and Equity will award up to five college or university student groups with $500 each to create a Virtual Academic Community Experience during National Public Health Week (April 5-11, 2021). While the COVID-19 pandemic is keeping us physically apart, these Virtual Academic Community Experiences will spark an important dialogue on the connections between climate change and health inequities and inspire action. The deadline to apply is March 1.
