Monica Adams

Monica Adams spearheads Denver Roller Skates program

Monica Adams set out to find other rollerskaters in the Denver community, but now Denver Roller Skates has 2200+ members! They share rollerskating events all around town from businesses like Denver Skates, Colorado Skate Fitness, Denver Urban Skate, Tracks/Roll, etc. They partner with these organizations to host free rollerskating workshops to teach people how to rollerskate and teach different styles of skating like skatepark skating or jam skating (kind of like dancing on skates). To give back to the community, they hosted a Back to School drive for our rollerskating teachers and recently had a local skate shop, Death and Glory, donate full skate setups and safety gear for 2 children.

Monica would love for HBSC to join in on the fun! You can get involved on their Facebook page linked below.

New Graduate Student Board

We are posting a new cork board in the hallway outside the HBSC administrative office to highlight our graduate students and their research. The board will be similar to the faculty research board with pictures of current students, recent publications, and areas of interest. This is an opportunity to show off your work and get to know the research interests of other students in the program. Please send Itzel the following to itzel.cervantes@ucdenver.edu:

  • A photo (can be a headshot or something fun)
  • A recent publication of your choice (if any)
  • 3-5 key words to summarize your research interests (for example: maternal health, food insecurity, vaccine hesitancy, access to transgender healthcare)

Even if you don’t have any published work, we still want to feature you! Please send in your materials no later than October 31. Contact us any time throughout the semester if you would like to update the information on the board.

Opportunities Beyond CU Denver

Congressional Social Determinants of Health Caucus is seeking public feedback

Congressional responsibility for programs to address SDOH is divided among many Committees, while programs addressing health and social needs are splintered across multiple federal agencies. The bipartisan Congressional Social Determinants of Health Caucus brings together members of Congress from disparate jurisdictions to highlight the opportunities for coordination across programs, to improve health outcomes, and to maximize existing and future federal investments in health, food, housing, transportation, and other important drivers of health.
