November 12th 2:30pm, NC 1130 - HBSC Colloquium "Leveraging Health Services to Promote Sexual Health Equity in Young Women of Color" with Sneha Thamotharan, PhD, University of Colorado Denver, Psychology.
Black and Latina adolescent girls (young women of color, YWC) are heavily burdened by poor sexual health outcomes. YWC represent 57% of all adolescent births and 79% of HIV infections among adolescents in the US, although they only represent 26% of adolescent females. This is due in large part to inadequate health services, in particular poor patient- provider interactions. Differences in medical treatment occur by race, ethnicity, and gender. Racial and ethnic minoritized patients receive lower quality, ineffective healthcare compared to non-minoritized patients, even when access-related factors (e.g., insurance, income) are controlled. Dr. Thamotharan will explore processes that impact the provision of sexual and reproductive health services to young women of color, as well as opportunities to improve healthcare quality and reduce health disparities.
