Spring 2022 HBSC Elective

HBSC 6022 Federal Data for Health Research and Policy, Fridays 9am-12pm: In this course, students will develop the knowledge and skills required to effectively use a variety of federal statistical data sets for health research and policy analysis. Each week is devoted to one or two federal statistical datasets--how the data are collected; why they are collected and what health issues they are designed to address; what population they represent and at what geographic scale. Most critically, the lectures will distinguish between questions that can be addressed with a public version of the data and questions that require restricted versions of the data that are protected by federal law and guidelines. Students will read, discuss, and present research from various perspectives (Demography, Economics, Geography, Public Health, Sociology) using these data sources and applying their knowledge of data analysis in their disciplines. Toward the end of the course, the lecture subject matter will become more focused on how to gain access to restricted data and how to protect individual anonymity with best practice disclosure avoidance techniques.

This course is offered both in a 3-credit hour option and a 1-credit hour option. The 1-credit option runs from 9am-10am. The 3-credit option includes a 2-hour hands-on lab from 10am-12pm.

If you are interested in registering for this Spring course, it should be in the catalog for registration in the first week of January. Please also notify Anne Marie at annemarie.summers@ucdenver.edu if you are registering for your required electives so that she can arrange your tuition and fee support.

Upcoming Events

November 12th 2:30pm, NC 1130 - HBSC Colloquium "Leveraging Health Services to Promote Sexual Health Equity in Young Women of Color" with Sneha Thamotharan, PhD, University of Colorado Denver, Psychology.

Black and Latina adolescent girls (young women of color, YWC) are heavily burdened by poor sexual health outcomes. YWC represent 57% of all adolescent births and 79% of HIV infections among adolescents in the US, although they only represent 26% of adolescent females. This is due in large part to inadequate health services, in particular poor patient- provider interactions. Differences in medical treatment occur by race, ethnicity, and gender. Racial and ethnic minoritized patients receive lower quality, ineffective healthcare compared to non-minoritized patients, even when access-related factors (e.g., insurance, income) are controlled. Dr. Thamotharan will explore processes that impact the provision of sexual and reproductive health services to young women of color, as well as opportunities to improve healthcare quality and reduce health disparities.

November 16th, 4:00pm, Online - Annual Lorna Grindlay Moore, PhD Faculty Launch Awardee Lecture for Research in Women's Health "Fostering Resilience Among Early Mothers Early (FRAME): Investigation of Perinatal Depression, Child Body Mass Index, and Multi-level Protective Factors in New Zealand" with Charlotte Farewell, PhD. Join online.

November 17th 1:00pm, Online - CPC Seminar "Promoting Equity Through Implementation Research for Cervical Cancer Prevention" with Prajakta Adsul, MBBS, MPH, PhD, University of New Mexico, Department of Internal Medicine. Register online.

Submitting a manuscript for publication soon?

Marisa Westbrook found the following pre-manuscript submission checklist helpful and thought others might too. Marisa said, "I just found it through Dr. Mirya Holman's newsletter (which is very witty and full of curse words but very useful)."
