Training Opportunities and Conferences

Cultural Anthropology Methods Program (CAMP)

The NSF Cultural Anthropology Methods program (CAMP) provides advanced methods training for Ph.D. students. Students must be enrolled in a U.S. university, but they are not required to be U.S. citizens. Preference will be given to students who (1) demonstrate that their dissertation will contribute to anthropology, (2) have a clearly stated research question or problem, (3) have a clear need for the methods instruction provided at CAMP. Students may come as novices in anthropological methods or may already have advanced methods skills, but all should be able to explain how participating in NSF CAMP will help them grow as researchers, practitioners, or teachers. There are 20 slots available in the NSF CAMP program each year. The deadline to apply is March 15, 2021.

Spring 2022 HBSC Elective

HBSC 6022 Federal Data for Health Research and Policy, Fridays 9am-12pm: In this course, students will develop the knowledge and skills required to effectively use a variety of federal statistical data sets for health research and policy analysis. Each week is devoted to one or two federal statistical datasets--how the data are collected; why they are collected and what health issues they are designed to address; what population they represent and at what geographic scale. Most critically, the lectures will distinguish between questions that can be addressed with a public version of the data and questions that require restricted versions of the data that are protected by federal law and guidelines. Students will read, discuss, and present research from various perspectives (Demography, Economics, Geography, Public Health, Sociology) using these data sources and applying their knowledge of data analysis in their disciplines. Toward the end of the course, the lecture subject matter will become more focused on how to gain access to restricted data and how to protect individual anonymity with best practice disclosure avoidance techniques.

This course is offered both in a 3-credit hour option and a 1-credit hour option. The 1-credit option runs from 9am-10am. The 3-credit option includes a 2-hour hands-on lab from 10am-12pm.

If you are interested in registering for this Spring course, it should be in the catalog for registration in the first week of January. Please also notify Anne Marie at annemarie.summers@ucdenver.edu if you are registering for your required electives so that she can arrange your tuition and fee support.

PhD Student Bulletin Board Update

The PhD Student bulletin board is a great way for students in other cohorts and other graduate programs at the university to learn about overlapping interests. We've had many people stop by, observe, and complement our boards, but the graduate student board is particularly anemic right now. We would love to celebrate you and your work on this board - please help!

Please send the following to Itzel at itzel.cervantes@ucdenver.edu if you would like to share your infomation or even provide feedback.

  • A picture you would like displayed (i.e. professional headshot or a fun picture of you)
  • Published work (if applicable)
  • Reseach interests (i.e. structural determinants of health, basic needs security, health for all policies, etc.)
  • A fun fact about you or any other information you would like for others to see
