The Geospatial Analysis and Mapping Laboratory (GAM Lab)

The new Geospatial Analysis and Mapping Laboratory (GAMLab) is up and running with a number of faculty and graduate students making use of its cutting-edge resources. Research includes projects ranging from exploring spatial patterns of asthma in Denver to use of remote sensing to assess historical structures in Lushan, China. The GAMLab is CU Denver’s premier geospatial research lab, established to facilitate research among GES faculty and students, as well as to connect members of academic, governmental, private, and community sectors working with geographic information science & technologies.

The Facility for Advanced Spatial Technologies (the FAST Lab)

The FAST Lab is the teaching and learning hub for all geospatial activity across the University of Colorado Denver.  Interdisciplinary by design, this lab enables students of various backgrounds to utilize the power of geospatial application wherever the interest lies. With a student staff happy to consult on spatial project design or GIS software, a growing resource library with introductory material to address software application, and a fleet of over 50 high-powered Dell Precision workstations able to handle raster and vector analysis, visualization of spatial data, and machine learning, the FAST Lab is the place for students interested in spatial technology. 

For a curriculum-based experience, the FAST Lab supports classes that teach subject matter to include: introduction to geographical information systems, imagery and remote sensing, cartography, programming and automation, spatial statistics, web deployment, and free and open-source software for geospatial application.  A successful combination of these classes can earn a student a GIS Certificate applied to any major.

The GES Urban Farm Field Research Station

A 13 acre operating urban farm dedicated to supporting the department’s program in Sustainable Urban Agriculture, as well as a range of faculty and student research projects focused on urban farming methods, environmental monitoring, soil and water conservation, and landscape restoration.  Located at the Five Fridges Farm in nearby Wheat Ridge, just to the northwest of downtown.
