Rachel E. Harding, Associate Professor in the Department of Ethnic Studies, explains to Religion News why an increasing number of Black Americans are turning to African spiritualities. She states that African religions, like African American Christianity, celebrate Black identity and comfort oppressed Black people: “The key characteristics of the religions that Black people created on this side of the Atlantic everywhere — in Haiti, Cuba, the United States, Venezuela and Brazil — are that these are our means by which we affirm the deepest humanity of people."
