Deans Notes - April 16, 2020

Letter from Dean Pamela Jansma

Financial Support for Our Students

We are all doing so much to support our students in any way we can right now. I’ve been heartened to hear about all the ways CLAS has been coming together during these unprecedented times to try to make our virtual community just as strong and vibrant as our on-campus community. One more way we can all think about helping immediately, and it might be the most critical of all to the success of our most vulnerable students, is to give financially. I encourage everyone to think about giving what they can to the Loving Lynx Fund.

The Loving Lynx Fund is a resource available for CU Denver students experiencing financial hardship due to the pandemic (and other crises). Some expenses the fund may cover include: medications, safety needs, replacement of essential personal belongings, and emergency housing. Right now, funds are available to disperse and students are not submitting many requests, so please help spread the word in your classes and other communications with students. The application process is easy and is being expedited to get funds to students faster than ever.  To apply for aid, students contact lovinglynx@ucdenver.edu.

In support of our graduate students, the Graduate School is converting more of the Chancellor’s Master’s Scholarship Funds to Master’s Retention and Completion Fellowships. These funds will be available for master’s students who are experiencing a serious financial hardship that prevents continuation of their studies and graduation. The Graduate School is accepting requests up to half of tuition with a maximum of $2500, but can be flexible in extreme cases. Master’s students do not necessarily need to be in programs formally affiliated with the Graduate School to qualify. Funds are very limited, so faculty who believe they know of students in need of these funds should send a letter of advocacy to Senior Associate Dean Inge Wefes, (inge.wefes@ucdenver.edu).

Thank you for everything that you are doing already for our students.  Together, we will pull through.

Pam

Meat Eating Helped Make Us Human, says Charles Musiba

News

A long-standing claim is that we became human when we became carnivorous-omnivorous creatures. "Meat-eating has always been considered one of the things that made us human, with the protein contributing to the growth of our brains," says Charles Musiba, Associate Professor of Anthropology.
