Alejandro Lucero, who just graduated in December with a degree in English–Creative Writing, has had his poetry chapbook, Sapello Son, accepted for publication by Bull City Press, a nationally renowned poetry press out of Durham, North Carolina. A "chapbook" is a poetry collection roughly one third to one half the length of a full-length poetry collection. In addition to publishing individual poems in literary journals, publishing a chapbook is often a significant step for a poet on the way to publishing a full book. Sapello Son was Alejandro's honors project, for which he received summa cum laude. The manuscript addresses, in a variety of poetic forms, Lucero’s complex and often difficult childhood in the town of Sapello, New Mexico. Sapello Son was the "Editor's Choice" for publication with Bull City Press and will be published in fall 2023. Prior to this acceptance, Lucero had already published his poems in a number of prestigious national literary journals, including in The Adroit Journal, The Cincinnati Review, Nashville Review, The Offing, Salt Hill, and Quarterly West.
