Join us to learn from one of the nation’s experts about eCognition, a powerful remote sensing feature extraction platform that has recently been made available to CU Denver faculty and students after a major gift from Trimble to the University. Trimble eCognition segments and classifies imagery using object-based image analysis (OBIA) algorithms and allows for the fusion of additional data sources like GIS and LiDAR. Jarlath will present some of the functionality and classification approaches for the software, including the development of reusable fuzzy-logic rules sets, show some examples, and take questions. Sponsored by CU Denver Geospatial Analysis & Mapping Laboratory and Department of Urban and Regional Planning. All are welcome.

Jarlath O’Neil-Dunne is Director of the UVM Spatial Analysis Lab and is nationally known for his expertise in the use of eCognition to conduct object-based image analysis (OBIA). Over the years his research has focused on the application of geospatial technology to a broad range of natural resource-related issues such as environmental justice, wildlife habitat mapping, high-elevation forest decline, land cover change detection, community health, and water quality modeling. Most recently his work has centered on high-resolution land cover mapping. The results of his urban tree canopy assessments, many of them based on eCognition, have been used by dozens of communities to establish tree canopy goals.
