Brian Buma Looks at the Increasing Impacts of Fire

Published: Feb. 5, 2020

Assistant Integrative Biology Professor Brian Buma, whose research is providing important information on how ecosystems can recover after fires, says, “If you’re going to put a house in the middle of the woods, you have to think about how those woods are going to burn. It’s a great opportunity to link with local scientists, local fire managers, local foresters.”

His most recent paper looks at fires across all of the US West, which are increasing at an unprecedented scope and resolution, and asks if that rapid increase is actually self-regulating.  In other words, if a place burns, how long till it can burn again?
