Melnick and Li on plate effects on kids’ eating

Emily Melnick, doctoral candidate in Health and Behavioral SciencesPublished this month, research in Association of Plate Design With Consumption of Fruits and Vegetables Among Preschool Children (in the JAMA Pediatrics journal) found that on days when kids used certain plates they served themselves nearly 14 grams more vegetables per day on average — and ate about 7.5 grams more — than when using their usual white plates. "It's a really important time period in children’s lives to experience fruits and vegetables," said lead investigator Emily Melnick, a doctoral candidate in Health and Behavioral Sciences who conducted the research with Assistant Professor in Health and Behavioral Sciences Meng Li.
