Outcomes

Outcome 1: Facilitating education and scholarship about practice-based ethics in communication

Over the course of the series, the Daniels Fund Colloquia on Ethics in Communication will enable many of CU Denver's 500+ communication majors and faculty to be involved in planning and implementing programs, including classroom visits, workshops, and keynote events, that bring them into close interface with guest experts to generate in-depth scholarly discourse about the meaning and impact of ethics and integrity in gathering, disseminating, and interpreting information.

Outcome 2: Broadening the audience for discussion about ethics and integrity in gathering and interpreting information

The Daniels Fund Colloquia on Ethics in Communication will provide occasions to bring guest scholars together with as many as 250 more students and faculty from area high schools and other universities, in addition to media professionals, civic leaders, and the public for discussion and consideration of the crucial roles of ethics and integrity as the foundation for presentation of credible, trustworthy information in sustaining a healthy democracy. Media coverage of the visiting guests and their events could extend awareness even further throughout the community.

Outcome 3: Creating an archive of expert information relating to issues of ethics and integrity in communication

CU Denver communication students and faculty will archive the proceedings of The Daniels Fund Colloquia on Ethics in Communication to establish a library of the guests' presentations, interviews with local media and civic leaders, and referrals to their relevant collected writings. The capabilities of the Media Learning Lab will be used to record and edit the proceedings, post the material as a reference resource on a website to establish a free public archive, and use social media to promote the resource.

Outcome 4: Continuing the programs as an educational and community service

We believe the scope and relevance of The Daniels Fund Colloquia on Ethics in Communication will succeed in generating positive responses from participants and audiences that, in turn, will stimulate ongoing interest among prospective guests and future audiences and inspire other funders to support the program.

Outcome 5: Changing attitudes about the essential importance of practice-based ethics and integrity in communication

The Daniels Fund Colloquia on Ethics in Communication will be but one component in a long-term process, but impact can be measured by requiring students participating in classroom and seminar activities to complete pre- and post-program surveys, and by asking keynote event registrants a series of short questions both before and after attending.
