Romero Troupe

On March 21st, the Romero Theater Troupe celebrated their 20th anniversary.  Founded and run by James Walsh, the troupe uses the stage to preserve erased stories of human rights struggles and to educate the public about important activism and community organizing efforts.  The troupe uses a completely unique form of theater called Organic Theater, involving a collective effort to shape stories which honors the narrative of the storyteller.  Over the course of their 20 year history, over 600 people have been involved with the troupe, including nearly 250 UCD students. Walsh was inspired to start the troupe in 2005 after assigning his students the task of creating short skits for their final projects.  The results highlighted the value of using the arts as a teaching and learning tool.  Walsh is stepping away from the troupe, allowing it to grow in new directions.  Through his years with the Political Science Dept., the troupe has offers dozens of our students the opportunity to experience civic engagement through radical theater.
