Our Department is very proud to annouce that two of our majors have recently published essays in the Release Peace Magazine, a publication based in the Hague and featuring commentary by student authors around the world. The two student authors are Sarah Qanbar and Antonio Denis. Congratulations to both!
Sara's essay is titled "Where History Went Wrong: A Review of De-Ba'athification in Iraq Post 2003" In this essay, Sarah argues that US-imposed De-Ba'athification processes in Iraq following the deposing of Saddam Hussein did not achieve their aim of ushering in a pluralistic democracy in Iraq. As Sarah describes, "The architects of the reforms believed that removing Ba’athist influence and distributing authority among Iraq’s diverse communities would lay the foundation for a peaceful future. Instead, the sudden policy shifts weakened state institutions, deepened social divisions, and triggered violent power struggles that still shape Iraq’s governance two decades later." You can find Sarah's essay here: Where History Went Wrong: A Review of De-Ba’athification in Iraq Post-2003 – Release Peace.
Antonio's essay is titled "The Depiction of War, Society, and Peace in Animation." In this essay, Antonio shows how " animation is more than squash-and-stretch characters, zany gags, and outrageous set-pieces. It has proven itself to be a powerful tool for a variety of purposes, from the dramatic to the business-oriented, and even as a political propaganda tool." You can find Antonio's essay here: The Depiction of War, Society, and Peace in Animation – Release Peace.
We are honored to have such thoughtful and high-achieving students here at CU Denver and in our Political Science program!
