Philosophy and Everyday Life
Requirements: Recipients shall be declared philosophy majors, philosophy minors, ethics minors, or any other student who has completed (or will complete in the semester of application), his/her third course in philosophy. Recipients shall also have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.25.
Preferences:
- Currently declared as a CU Denver philosophy major, philosophy minor, or ethics minor
- Cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher
- Enrolled in at least 6 credit hours
This scholarship is intended to reward students for their good academic work; to help defray the cost of their education; to encourage them to take the leap, despite the risks, and continue their formal study of philosophy; and to help them realize for themselves the importance of philosophy in their lives. For the spring semester, the deadline to apply is end of May. For the fall semester, the deadline to apply is end of November. The Department of Philosophy reserves the right not to award a scholarship for any given semester should the evaluating committee judge that no applications merit it. The scholarship amount is $1,000.

Get an Edge with Ethics
Recipients who apply during the spring semester will receive scholarship funding for the next fall semester. Recipients who apply during the fall semester will receive scholarship funding for the next spring semester.
Requirements:
- Any CU Denver student who:
- Is currently enrolled for classes next semester at CU Denver,
- Has previously completed at least one philosophy ethics course (introductory or otherwise) that could count toward an Ethics Certificate or the Ethics Minor,
- Is enrolled in and will complete an upper or lower division ethics course next semester (drop/withdraw of ethics course will void eligibility),
- Has a cumulative CU Denver GPA of at least 3.0.
The purpose of this scholarship is to encourage students to take an ethics course and to consider pursuing an ethics certificate and/or pursuing a major or minor in philosophy. For the spring semester, the deadline to apply is end of May. For the fall semester, the deadline to apply is end of November. The Department of Philosophy reserves the right not to award a scholarship for any given semester should the evaluating committee judge that no applications merit it. Please note: Scholarship recipients may, if they wish, apply again for this scholarship for a different semester than the one already awarded. However, priority will be given to students who would be first-time recipients of the award. The scholarship amount is $500.

Pay it Back Grant
The Philosophy Department is excited to announce the $5,000 Pay it Back Grant for Philosophy Majors!
Requirements: Students must be a declared Philosophy major at CU Denver in their sophomore year or above. Recipients shall also have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.00, and existing student debt exceeding $5,000.
Application Information: Send a pdf file with application to our program assistant, Maya Thieme at maya.thieme@ucdenver.edu, or drop it off in person to Maya in the Plaza Building, Suite M108. Please submit by October 31, 2025.
Must have:
- Completion of short essay
- Recommendation from a Philosophy Department Professor
- Proof of outstanding student debt

The purpose of this grant is to assist with paying down student loan debt. This grant is funded by a CU Denver Lifelong Learner student, Jim Greenwood, and his wife Karen. Jim has been part of the Lifelong Learners Program for six years and has become a friend of the Philosophy Department. Jim and Karen would like to "Pay It Back" by helping a student with their existing debt. They started the Pay It Back Grant after retirement. Since then, the Greenwoods have awared Pay It Back Grants to healthcare workers with student debt for 5 years. They are excited about continuing this program at CU Denver.
Philosophy Emergency Aid
The Philosophy Department is looking out for you, the student. If you need emergency financial assistance* that is preventing you from attending class, please reach out to the department Program Assistant for further information. Preference will be given to students who are declared Philosophy Majors and Minors (any of the philosophy minors). Students who have completed two philosophy classes at CU Denver will be considered. Qualifying students cannot be currently employed by CU Denver in any capacity.
*The Chair in consultation with the faculty will make the decision. Aid will be contingent on the department's budget situation.
