How to Enroll in New Directions Courses Without Pursuing a Full Degree

You are welcome to apply and then register directly for any New Directions course as a “non-degree student.” The application process is simple, requiring only an unofficial transcript to confirm your level of coursework.

If you are applying for the first time, it can be helpful to reach out to the program director who can support you through the process.

1) Apply As a Non-Degree Student

Most students should apply as non-degree applicants and take courses for credit. Even if you aren’t sure where your studies will take you, credits can often be counted toward a certificate or degree later.

Fee Waiver: If the application fee is a barrier, please contact the program director to request a waiver.

Certificate or Not: You will be asked whether you want to pursue a certificate sub-plan during the application process. If you choose Public, Non-Profit and Community Leadership OR Labor Leadership the program director will be able to follow your application through the process. You will not be bound by the courses offered under that certificate and there are no consequences for changing your mind or taking only one or two classes. If you do not choose a certificate your application will be processed by central Admissions. The choice is completely up to you.

Non-Degree Applications

(For Credit)

Graduate Non-Degree Application

Undergraduate Non-Degree Application

With instructor permission, you may have the option of taking a course without being graded (sometimes referred to as “auditing” a course). Contact the program director or the faculty member teaching your course for permission FIRST. We will direct you on how to apply. Please note tuition is charged regardless of credit/no credit.

2) Find a course that you're interested in taking!

Most of our courses are "cross-listed", which means they are open to both graduate and undergraduate level students based on your prior educational experience. If you have an undergraduate degree, we strongly recommend that you take the graduate level of a course to explore your abilities and for the potential to apply the credits toward a certificate or degree later.

3) Register for your course!

Once you get notice that your application has been processed, you will receive information on how to log into your student portal where you can register! Follow these detailed instructions for how to register for courses. Select “Extended Studies” as your campus (Not “Denver Campus”).

How much do courses cost?

Graduate level courses are just under $1600 for just under 40 hours of instruction (2026-2027 year). Community registrants are not eligible for financial aid or scholarships but check with your employer about tuition reimbursement for continuing and professional education.
