Registration for Spring 2027 is approaching. This page highlights several course-planning considerations that may be especially important as you prepare your schedule. It is intended to supplement, not replace, the official course schedule, catalog, and program requirements.
Who is this page for? This information is primarily intended for students pursuing a MATH BS, including all concentration areas, or a Data Science BS. Some information may also be useful for students pursuing a MATH minor or other programs that include upper-division MATH coursework.
Please review the Spring 2027 MATH course offerings, MATH course descriptions in the catalog, and the requirements for your degree program or concentration as you plan.
Register Early
Students are strongly encouraged to register as early as possible.
Registering early helps ensure that you have the best selection of available courses and seats. It also helps the department assess enrollment and make informed decisions about which courses can run as planned. Courses with low enrollment may be at risk of cancellation.
If your plans change later, you can adjust your schedule during the appropriate registration period. Registering early gives both you and the department more flexibility as Spring 2027 approaches.
Before You Register
Check course prerequisites. Prerequisites are important when planning your schedule. Before enrolling in any course, review its catalog description and make sure you have completed, or are currently completing, the required prerequisite coursework.
Plan ahead for future semesters. Some MATH courses are offered only once per year or less frequently. The information below reflects our current course planning and is intended to help students make informed registration decisions. Future course offerings are subject to change.
Required Courses: Important Spring 2027 Offerings
MATH 4779 — Math Clinic
MATH 4779 is required for all MATH BS students, regardless of concentration, and serves as the capstone course for the program.
Math Clinic is offered only in Spring semesters. Students planning to graduate in Spring, Summer, or Fall 2027 must take MATH 4779 in Spring 2027, since the next planned offering is Spring 2028.
MATH 3310 — Introduction to Real Analysis I
MATH 3310 is required for all MATH BS students, regardless of concentration, and is offered only in Spring semesters.
Students who are eligible to take MATH 3310 are encouraged to take it sooner rather than later in their program. The proof-writing and mathematical reasoning skills developed in this course are useful in many upper-division MATH courses.
Students planning to graduate in Spring, Summer, or Fall 2027 must take MATH 3310 in Spring 2027, since the next planned offering is Spring 2028.
MATH 4733 — Partial Differential Equations
MATH 4733 is required for students in the Applied Mathematics concentration and may also be used as an elective by students in other MATH BS concentrations.
We do not currently anticipate offering MATH 4733 again before Spring 2029. Applied Mathematics students who are eligible to take the course, particularly those planning to graduate in Spring, Summer, or Fall 2027, should plan carefully around the Spring 2027 offering.
Students in other concentrations who are interested in partial differential equations should also consider taking advantage of the Spring 2027 offering.
MATH 4388 — Machine Learning Methods
MATH 4388 is required for students in the Data Science concentration.
We do not currently plan to offer MATH 4388 in Summer or Fall 2027. Data Science concentration students planning to graduate in Spring, Summer, or Fall 2027 should plan to take MATH 4388 in Spring 2027.
Required Course: Plan Ahead
MATH 3000 — Introduction to Abstract Mathematics
MATH 3000 is required for all MATH BS students, regardless of concentration.
MATH 3000 is not being offered in Spring 2027, but we currently plan to offer it in Fall 2027.
Because MATH 3000 is also a prerequisite for several upper-division MATH courses, students are encouraged to complete it relatively early in their program when possible. Completing MATH 3000 can help keep more upper-division course options available in future semesters.
Infrequently Offered Elective Opportunities
MATH 4792 — Probabilistic Modeling
MATH 4792 will be offered in Spring 2027 and is not offered frequently.
Students who are interested in probabilistic modeling and who are eligible to take the course should consider the Spring 2027 offering, since we do not know when the course may be offered again.
MATH 4733 — Partial Differential Equations
For students outside the Applied Mathematics concentration, MATH 4733 may be used as an elective toward the MATH BS.
Because we do not currently anticipate offering MATH 4733 again before Spring 2029, students who are interested in partial differential equations should consider taking advantage of the Spring 2027 offering.
