On June 28th, 2022, PhD student R. Ryan Jones presented his research progress to the American Arachnological Society at the Davis campus of the University of California. In his presentation, which was co-authored by his advisor Dr. Paula Cushing at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, Ryan demonstrated how use of sub-genomic data called ultra-conserved elements (UCEs), has led to greater taxon coverage and phylogenetic resolution for three focal groups of camel spiders (solifuges). Consequent to this analysis, Ryan and Dr. Cushing believe that two large species groups, the Eremobates pallipes and Eremobates scaber species groups need to be redefined and then elevated to their own genera. Lastly, Ryan presented additional integrative methods for building robust species designations based upon objective morphological analyses and environmental modelling. The work so far shows that some of the current species diversity may be overestimated and in need of combination, while seven putatively new species of solifuge need to be described.
