Targeting metabolic changes in cancer cells may enable the development of novel therapies or the enhancement of existing ones. My lab studies how cancer cells use lipid to their benefit, with focus on how they burn it to resist drug treatments and continue growing. Carnitine palmitoyl transferase 1A (CPT1A) is a liver enzyme that shuttles long-chain lipids into the mitochondria, controlling the rate of fat oxidation. Unexpectedly, this liver enzyme is very abundant in common cancers like breast and prostate cancers, making it a good target for therapeutic interventions. In this talk, I will discuss the role of CPT1A in normal physiology and disease, with focus on prostate cancer. The first line of therapy for prostate cancer is blocking the androgen hormones that fuel the cancer growth. However, this approach is not very effective, and patients progress to an aggressive form of the disease that is currently incurable. We have found that in these aggressive tumors, CPT1A and the androgen receptor have a peculiar relationship. Understanding how this relationship works at the molecular level will help us identify and design new therapies to halt cancer progression.
