Fall seminar is starting up again on Friday, Sept. 2nd, and our first speaker will be, Dr. Chris Martyniuk. Please email Jacki to request the Zoom Link for all the Zoom seminars.   All seminars will be from Noon-1:00pm.  In-person seminars will be held in North Classroom, room 1207 on the Denver Campus. Hello Everyone!

For those that I haven't met, my name is Trevor Carter and I am the GAC student representative for the 22-23 academic year. I hope you all had a fun, safe, and productive summer, the fall semester is right around the corner and it’s time to welcome our new graduate students (and faculty) to the department. This year’s BioBlitz is scheduled for the first week of seminar (Friday 8/26 from 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM) and will be in person this year (North Classroom 1207 on the Auraria Campus).

For those of you who aren’t familiar with BioBlitz, it is a chance for incoming graduate students to learn about the ongoing research in our department. Current graduate students and faculty can give brief (2 minutes maximum) introductions to their research. The goal is to give incoming students and the rest of the department a brief overview of the research currently happening in your lab.   

It would be amazing to get high participation and representation from all current graduate students and faculty! Please try to limit each presentation to 1 slide and 2 minutes or less. Please email your slides to me by Wednesday (8/24) at 5:00 PM so I can put them together. I will try to group presentations by lab group and similar research. I look forward to seeing you all then! Dear Colleagues,

Hello everyone.  I hope you are enjoying the last two weeks of the summer break.

I am now the Interim Chair.  Please send requests for graders to me.  Also, if you are planning on routing any grants, let me know ahead of time so I can prioritize the various trainings I have to take so I can get your grants routed expeditiously.

I will contact you again on August 15^th, when we return full time to prepare for the fall semester that starts August 22^nd.  However, I did want to bring you some news now.

We have had some departures over the past year: Tod Duncan (Senior Instructor), Cheri Jones (Senior Instructor), Enrique Karr (Laboratory Preparation); and some partial departures: John Swallow (Professor and former Chair) who is now 50% time in the department and 50% time in the CLAS Dean’s office, and Brian Buma (Associate Professor) who will become a Research Associate Professor working with the Environmental Defense Fund.

We have some new additions to the department, please welcome:

• Mike Moore, Assistant Professor
• Erin Kelso, Senior Instructor (General Biology M2C lab coordination)
• Paul Le, Senior Instructor (General Biology O2E lab coordination)
• Kristen Baird, Biology Laboratory Preparation Coordinator

Also, a couple of things to put on your radar:

1. Annual Merit Review must be finished and submitted to the Dean by September 23^rd.  Note that the reporting period has changed and this merit review evaluation period is January 1, 2021 – June 30, 2022.  I am working with Mike Greene and Merit Review Committee to come up with timelines for submission of your FAR using Interfolio.
2. Because of faculty changes and sabbaticals there will be changes in departmental administration (Chair, Associate Chair and Director of the Graduate Program) and changes in departmental standing committees.  Please starting thinking about your vision for the department and how you may like to serve the department and our students.
