Inside Out: The Microbiome, Museum Specimens, and the Future of Natural History Research

This seminar offers exploration of the microbiome in both human and non-human systems, highlighting its critical significance for health, ecology, and evolution. It will delve into the various methodologies used to study microbial communities and their essential roles in our lives and the environment.

Additionally, this talk will highlight the extended specimen movement and emphasize the need for genetic and genomic research to fully leverage natural history collections. As repositories of biodiversity, natural history museums hold a treasure trove of biological samples that can provide unique insights into microbial communities. By fostering public trust and engaging communities, museums can play a vital role in educating people about microbes in an approachable way, dispelling fears and celebrating the incredible diversity of life that surrounds us.
