Grassland birds of the Chihuahuan Desert in Mexico: a 15-year journey

Grassland birds in North America have shown important population declines for more than 50 years, mainly due to the loss and degradation of their habitat. Such a tendency and the fact that most breeding grassland birds of the Great Plains overwinter in the Chihuahuan Desert (CHD), ignited the study of such populations in the CHD since 2006, especially in Mexico. Unknowns on distribution, densities, survival, home range, sex ratios, and genetic diversity of wintering grassland birds have been unveiled. Resident birds of the CHD have also been studied, particularly the endemic Worthen’s Sparrow and the southernmost Mountain Plover breeding population.
