When: October 30 @ 6:30 pm

Where: Fulginiti Pavilion for Bioethics and Humanities,

      on the Anschutz Medical Campus

      13080 East 19th Avenue, Aurora CO 80045

Who: Dr. Saikat C. Thakur (Auburn University) and Dr. Oak Nelson (Columbia University)

What: Wonders of the plasma universe: connecting the stars to your cell phones!

Tiny flickering lights in the night sky (stars) have always been a source of fascination. Our own star, the sun, is vital to life on earth, but is so much a part of our everyday lives that we can take it for granted. What is inside our sun? Why should we care? Researchers trying to answer such questions have expanded our understanding of matter at temperatures as hot as the sun and lightning! Come glimpse the growing field of plasma physics to learn – along with hands-on demos – how studying the stuff of stars could lead to creating a 'sun on earth', and how industrial applications of plasmas enabled manufacturing the cell phone you hold in your hand.

Location logistics: This is a special event on the Anschutz Medical Campus. There is pay parking close by in the Georgetown lot. The parking fee is $1 for the evening. Please note that there is no food service in the building. If you arrive on campus early, there are restaurants on the north side of Montview Blvd. at the center of campus, and at Colfax and Potomac St.

See you Monday!
